Jelly Roll gets real about possibly quitting music: 'If God tells me... I'm outta here'

For Jelly Roll, music might not be the final chapter.

During a backstage interview at the Grand Ole Opry shared September 13, the 41-year-old country star said he's fully open to walking away from his career if he feels a higher calling pulling him elsewhere.

“Everything that Jason or Jelly Roll wanted to do in the music business, I’ve done now, so at this point I really need to go talk to God and see if he wants me to stick around, or what he wants me to do next,” said the singer, whose real name is Jason DeFord.

He even joked that if he felt called to work at a homeless shelter in Kentucky, he'd leave the spotlight behind without hesitation.

“If God tells me to go work at a homeless shelter in Paducah, Ky., I’m outta here,” added Jelly. “Y’all will never see me again.”

The star continued, “He gave me everything I ever wanted, man — Grammys, ACMs, CMAs, I’m a member of the Grand Ole Opry, like — God has done it.”

Jelly Roll began his career as a rapper in the early 2000s before shifting into country music with his 2021 major-label debut. Since then, he's built a decorated career, earning multiple platinum singles, a No. 1 album, a CMA Award, an ACM Award, and three Grammy wins across different categories.

Earlier this summer, Jelly Roll told fans he planned to take a break after the final stop of his tour in late July, saying he needed time to rest and heal.

That announcement came shortly after his divorce from wife Bunnie Xo was finalised.
