Ridley Scott reveals the secret behind making a great movie

The latest post-apocalyptic drama, The Dog Stars, is directed by Ridley Scott.

While Ridley has directed several well-known movies, including Gladiator II, Napoleon, Alien, The Martian, Prometheus, American Gangster, Kingdom of Heaven, and others, The Dog Stars has marked another milestone in his career as the movie is based on Peter Heller’s novel The Dog Stars.

In an interview with People Magazine, the acclaimed director opened up about the core of any movie, saying, “It’s all about what’s on paper before you begin.”

“If you’ve got a film on paper, then fundamentally, that’s it. That’s the most important, significant thing you can have,” Ridley added.

Moreover, he reflected on how quickly he can evaluate any script’s potential: “I can tell within a page or two, I’m in good hands.”

“You kind of know. It’s the beat, the rhythm, the name he calls the people,” Ridley further added.

Speaking about how a small setting can create an entire cinematic universe, Ridley explained, “The end of the world would be the universe of a tin can called a spaceship. And the universe on that ship is seven people. The one person you don’t realize is a company person is also an AI. And worse, they land on another world and encounter a border monster. So that’s one kind of universe, right?”

Further talking about the challenges of creating a movie, “It’s tough, but the more you do it, I don’t think the easier it gets, but somehow you get more comfortable with this idea of making up a story,” the filmmaker shared.
