Tokyo: Magnitude 5.9 earthquake rattles eastern Kanto region
The tremor hit at a depth of 58km today, centered approximately 27km from Saitama
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Tokyo and parts of the eastern Kanto region, causing noticeable jolts on Sunday.
According to reports, shaking registered lower 5 on Japan’s seven-point seismic scale with no threat of a tsunami. Lower 5 intensity was noted in Tokyo’s Adachi Ward as well as in Ibaraki, Saitama and China prefectures. On the contrary, Level 4 was also recorded in other areas of Tokyo along with Tochigi, Gunma and Kanagawa districts.
The Japan Tourism Agency has created the Safety Tips application for receiving an immediate notification system when there is an earthquake of magnitude four or higher if there is a tsunami warning as well as showing evacuation tips. Further, the app shows real-time shaking throughout Japan and projected spread in the impacted zones.
The cell phones and community loudspeaker alerts were triggered while no significant damages were reported. Further this marks the largest quake over the past month, causing noticeable shaking across the Kanto region.
