European Athletics Championship is being held for the first time in the United Kingdom
Buckingham Palace on Friday released Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie’s pictures from the European Athletics Championship.
According to the palace, “The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh joined athletes and spectators at the European Athletics Championships Birmingham 2026, to celebrate the first time the games have been held in the UK.”
Prince Edward is the youngest brother o King Charles III and holds the Duke of Edinburgh title, previously held by their father, the late Prince Phillip.
Meanwhile, Reuters news agency reported that Britain's Amy Hunt completed a sprint double at the European Athletics Championships on Thursday, winning the women's 200 metres gold after claiming the 100m title on Monday.
Hunt held off a strong field to cross the line in 22.19 seconds, with Ireland's Rhasidat Adeleke closing fast to take silver in 22.28 seconds.
Dina Asher-Smith, Hunt's training partner and compatriot, missed out on second place by just 0.01 seconds, her seventh European Championships medal of her career.
