New AI tool can decode thoughts from brain scans

The recent breakthrough in AI has taken a giant leap towards the development of ‘mind captioning’ or ‘brain-to-text decoding' and retains the ability to translate a person’s brain activity into descriptive sentences.

The prime motive behind this groundbreaking technology is that it utilizes MRI scans to decode a person’s brain activity.

However, the cutting-edge approach could potentially help individuals struggling with language problems such as stroke victims, in communicating more efficiently.

Individuals have been raising concerns of exposing personal thoughts, emotions, and health conditions that could be used for manipulation or any other malevolent purposes.

The new revelation was reported by Scientific American based on a new paper in Science Advances, which used magnetic resonance imaging to understand how the brain interprets meaning while volunteers watched short clips.

Computational neuroscientist at the University of California, Alex Huth, stated that the computer predicts what a person is looking at in great detail.

It has been observed that in one trial, a volunteer observed someone plunging from a waterfall. The AI’s predictions intensified from granular word groupings to a spectacularly accurate sentence: “A person plunged over a deep waterfall on a mountain ridge.”

However, the technology wasn't limited to real-time observation; it could also produce parallel descriptions when participants recalled footage they had previously watched.

It has been observed that six volunteers were subjected to trials, where researchers assessed the level of exactitude for such a non-intrusive approach.

No doubt, the AI requires personal willingness to participate, extensive personalized training, and a massive MRI scanning device to perform.

Nonetheless, the moral implications are real as the technology advances, and it represents a major technological leap towards non-invasive communication.
