Detecting AI-created content is becoming increasingly difficult as the new technology’s capabilities continue to improve.
Consequently, Snapchat is now considering marking AI-created images to solve this issue.
The Santa-Monica-based platform is now introducing a watermark on AI-generated content which can be seen when it is saved to your camera roll or exported.
Surprisingly, Snapchat's AI watermark will be a ghost with sparkles next to it, according to EnGadget.
Users will know more when Snapchat — founded in 2011 — adds the feature "soon" as there doesn't seem to be any way to control where the icon appears (as is typical with watermarks).
Snapchat's steps to label in-app content are followed by the addition of an AI marker for externally seen images.
To indicate it's an AI feature, there’s the Extend tool, which creates the effect of a zoomed-out image.
Then, for AI to turn selfies into "fantastical images that transform their persona into new identities", there's the Dreams feature.
Moreover, anyone who receives a Dream image also gets a context card explaining its AI use.
CEO: Evan Spiegel's company also published an overview of its AI features and rules. This includes guidance as to how and where AI creations can be shared, according to Social Media Today.
It has notes like: "Do not assume generative AI outputs are true or depict real events. Generative AI can and will make mistakes, and as a result, outputs may be incorrect, inappropriate, or wrong."
