A safe city?
The recent abduction of the son of the sitting CJ of the Sindh High Court in broad daylight and the killing of renowned Qawwal Amjad Sabri at a busy thoroughfare have raised serious questions on the effectiveness of the Karachi operation. The foremost duty of the government is to safeguard the life and property of the people. I fail to comprehend why successive governments have not focused on installing high resolution cameras in the most violence hit city of the country. If a ‘safe city project’ can be launched in Islamabad then why not in the financial nerve centre of the country?
Karachi is the economic jugular vein of our country, yet those at the helm of affairs have not demonstrated their dedication to make Karachi a ‘crime-free city’. Whenever the law and order situation in Karachi gets aggravated, the Sindh government’s novel way to curb rising crime comes in the form of imposing a ban on pillion riding. It is high time sincere efforts were made to root out crime and terrorism from the megalopolis
