CINE WATCH

Mutants vs. Evil spirits

Good news for fans of the mutants, who feel superheroes are just so overrated! The ninth installment in the X-men franchise, X-men: Apocalypse will hit local screens, this weekend. Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac and more, the film is based on the rise of ancient über-mutant Apocalypse from sleep. He wants to take over the civilization and so decides to bring down the world. Professor Xavier and his students must find a way to stop him. This Bryan Singer directorial has received mixed reviews from critics but does promise a few standout moments for its fans.

Also expected to release tomorrow is Paksitani horror venture Aksbandh. Dubbed as Pakistan’s first found footage film, the film follows the story of six friends that go missing while filming a horror feature film in a jungle. Co-written by Ayaz Samoo and featuring a haunting melody by Shuja Hyder, Aksbandh promises to scare you enough that you leave the theatre crying for your momma. But whether it actually manages to do that, we’ll only know tomorrow.

FASHION

Of launches and trunk shows

This weekend, Karachi’s busiest mall, Dolmen City Mall, will witness the launch of another retail outlet, Tarzz. The brand caters to both men and women and will offer a variety of outfit options, including lawn, prêt wear and formal wear. The creative invites, shaped like a delicate leaf, have been sent out and look interesting enough to grab our attention. The ‘mere’ mention of the green carpet makes one wonder if this is a brand that will play on environmental responsibility. For that we will have to wait till 6:00pm today and find out for ourselves.

Amidst a myriad of multi-brand stores, Ensemble has really upped the fashion ante by bringing fashion from all across Pakistan to a single platform. Earlier this month, Karachiites were blessed with a trunk show featuring designers Zohra Rahman and Seher Tareen’s
futuristic fashion expertise in accessories and apparel, respectively, and this week it’s Islamabad’s turn to enjoy delectable Spring/Summer wear from Karachi-based designer Ayesha Farook Hashwani. The collection, titled Ellada, will be a ready-to-wear collection adapted from AFH’s FPW showcase last month.

Karachi will also see designers Rema and Sheherbano bring their line of trendy summer must-haves, all the way from Lahore, on May 21, along Rema’s signature accessories range. The collection will feature breezy tunics, off-shoulder tops to beat the heat off and this year’s hottest sensation, the tulip shalwar. For timings and further information refer to their official Facebook page.

COMEDY

With Improv theatre growing in popularity in Pakistan, shows are taking place almost every other weekend featuring a unique set of performers each time. Taking it forward is Faiza Saleem and gang, all set to bring another live set Improv Magar Pyar Se at Thotspot, to give a fun start to your weekend. The show will feature performances by some of the most sought-after stand-up comedians including the very talented Faiza Saleem, Shehzad Ghias and Faheem Azam alongside Jaffer Shah, Natalia Jillani and Laraib Asdaf. Thinking right on the spot and creating situations based on audience interaction, this bunch of comic artists will leave you teary-eyed with peals of laughter. The show will begin at 8:00 pm sharp and tickets will be available at the venue for PKR 300. Early birds will get cupcakes and vouchers for free. So be there on time and grab your tickets before it gets too late since this is going to be their last show before Ramazan.

MUSIC

After doing the rounds in Karachi and Lahore, the latest musical initiative Cornetto Pop Rock is all set for its final show in Islamabad, this weekend. Bringing back live music to universities, the show will feature musicians such as Noori, Ali Azmat, Zoe Viccaji and Umair Jaswal who will be performing to a live audience tomorrow at Lake View Park. While the show is primarily for the students of Bahria University, there a limited seats for the general public as well. Tickets cost PKR 5000 for a single person and PKR 8000 for couples. The show will begin at 8:00 pm sharp. For further details, you can visit their official facebook page.

Clarification: In an earlier version of this article, we mistakenly reported that tickets for the Cornetto Pop Rock concert that is scheduled to take place in Islamabad tonight are being sold to the public for PKR 5000 and PKR 8000. It is actually a private show, primarily for the students of Bahria University. Instep regrets this oversight.
