Instep takes a look at shows that have survived the axe.

It might surprise you but despite the years, Grey’s Anatomy, the medical drama that put Shonda Rhimes on the map, is persistently prevailing when it comes to ratings. The departure of several key cast members over the years hasn’t diminished the show’s enormous appeal across America and beyond. Part of the charm is that shows like Grey’s Anatomy and many others showcase the kind of diversity and characters that are simply omitted or ignored in and across Hollywood films. However, ratings play a big role as several shows head for a final run while others return for another season.

The doctors of Grey’s Anatomy will scrub in for the 13th season while the power-hungry political animals of Scandal will also come back with a sixth season. Vicious political monsters, Frank and Claire Underwood (played by Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright) who form the crux of House of Cards will also return for a fourth round this month as their murdering past catches up to them. Score.

Spearheaded by Viola Davis, How to Get Away with Murder, a show that takes its title way too seriously is also getting a third season. At this point, it remains to be seen who isn’t a murderer but anyway.

While the fate of Agent Carter is still a mystery, superhero fans can sigh with relief as Daredevil returns for a second season and Marvels’ Agents of Shield comes back for round four.

The Good Wife says a final goodbye as the series finale is set to air on May 8. On the other hand, the fate of Castle, a TV show that pairs up NYPD detectives with a murder mystery writer, is unknown. Sadly, the fate of Elementary, which showcases the exquisite partnership of Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson, is also unknown. Person of Interest is scrambling for an air-date and yes, season six is a long shot. It doesn’t help matters that series regular Sarah Shahi has signed a new TV series based on Nancy Drew.

Music fans can cheer up as Empire (starring Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard) has been renewed for another season. Scream Queens will come back and Lucifer’s fate is unknown. NBC’s The Blacklist and the curious Blindspot have also survived the axe.

The reboot of Heroes has been cancelled while crime shows continue to survive and thrive. Suits will make a comeback for a sixth round and the first episode of the new season will take off from where the show ended. Yes, that means a brittle rebuilding of the law firm called Pearson Specter Litt and a jailed Mike Ross.
