LAHORE University of Management and Technology (UMT) organised first national conference on “Pure and Applied Mathematics” on Saturday to discuss innovative ideas, share new information and talk about challenges taking place in the field. Renowned mathematicians from across Pakistan attended the conference inaugurated by UMT Rector Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad along with HEC Punjab chairman Prof Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin. PhD scholars, researchers, teachers and young scholars from renowned institutions such as Punjab University, Qarshi University, FAST, CIIT, LSE, UET, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University Peshawar, COMSATS, NUCES, SMS, University of Sargodha, GCU Faisalabad, GCU, Lahore GCWUF, NCBAE, University of Azad Jammu Kashmir, IMS, Lahore, University of Central Punjab, UOE, FC College Lahore, and others presented their research articles. Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad applauded the efforts of the mathematicians to contribute intellectually to the field of pure and applied mathematics. He said mathematics was the mother of all sciences and its applications were needed in all other fields. Dr Hasan also threw light on the contributions of Muslim mathematicians such as Al-Khawarizmi, Thabit bin Qurrah, Abu Kamil, Al-Karaji and Al-Jayyani etc who introduced new concepts and led the field for more than two centuries. He also hoped that the conference would pave the way for a journey into innovation, discovery to turn human living into a faithful beginning for the coming generations. The conference touched the recent advances in analysis, topology, algebraic geometry, number theory, fuzzy mathematics and dynamical systems. On the other hand, sessions were held on optimization techniques, relativity and subjects of interest in interdisciplinary sciences like physics, computer science and actuarial science. The participants shared their latest research findings and ways to develop future collaborations. A UMT spokesperson said the Higher Education Commission approved grants for the first UMT conference whereas American Journal of Applied Mathematics (AJAM) and Punjab University Journal of Mathematics (PUJM) published proceedings of the conference respectively. The conference will leave a deep impact upon the career path of students, doctorates and the post-doctorates, also quantitative-related research would be affected by it the days to come.
