Gilgit-Baltistan has the highest literacy rate in the country. Every year almost 6,000 students pass the intermediate examinations from the region but only 88 students get admitted to government universities in the medical discipline while 55 in the engineering field due to a limited quota. The rest of the students either give up their studies or choose some other field because they cannot afford private universities.
The government should increase the quota for students from GB or allow them to get admission on open merit. If this cannot be done then the government should construct at least one university each in the medical and engineering fields in Gilgit-Baltistan.
