Four policemen charged with killing Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) worker Waseem Dehlvi in custody were handed over to police on Friday on physical remand till June 13.
Sub-Inspector Zafar Iqbal, Sub-Inspector Noman Javed, Aziz Bhatti SHO Maqsood Raza and Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Zameer Hussain were arrested after Dehlvi died in custody at the Aziz Bhatti police station on June 2. Judicial Magistrate (East) Waseem Ahmed allowed the Aziz Bhatti police to question them till June 13.
A murder case was filed against the four under sections 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Aziz Bhatti police station.
According to the police report, the MQM worker was arrested along with his two brothers, Naeem and Adil, under Section 23-A. A pistol was also said to have been found on him.
The police said Dehlvi was involved in the Baldia garments factory fire case lodged at the SITE-B police station. During interrogation, he made some disclosures before the investigation team and Sub-Inspector Zafar Iqbal was informed about what he had said. Iqbal also arrived at the police station and joined the investigation team.
The SHO has been suspended and demoted, while three other policemen have been detained for interrogation. Sindh police chief Ghulam Hyder Jamali ordered the formation of an inquiry team to be headed by a DIG.
Medico-Legal Officer Dr Ejaz Ahmed of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre said in the postmortem report that he had died after being hit in the head by some blunt weapon. The postmortem report stated that his head bore torture marks, including lacerations. It said Dehlvi died of a heart attack during the torture.
The MQM condemned his death in custody and observed two days of mourning on Thursday and Friday.
The fire incident took place at Ali Enterprises located in Baldia Town on September 11, 2012, in which 258 workers had perished. Later, police said some people belonging to a political party had demanded a huge extortion amount from the factory owners, and when they did not pay up, their factory was set on fire.
