‘Sufism can help end extremism’
Islamabad : Extremism can be eliminated only if the teachings of great sufis are followed. Only sufism alone can prevent wars and promote tolerance and mutual respect as it unifies the people irrespective of their caste, culture, creed and religion.
This was stated by noted scholar of ‘sufism’ Professor Saeed Ahmad during an interactive literary session organised by the Research and Publication department of Lok Virsa here. The department had begun a series of interactive literary sessions named Muzakira at the Lok Virsa's Faiz Heritage Library.
Prof Saeed Ahmad, who penned various books on ‘sufism’ and children's literature, shed light on ‘sufism and it's relevance in modern day life.’ He said the message and teachings of ‘sufism’ were universal and timeless.
"With its all-embracing message of love, unity, tolerance and brotherhood we should imbue ourselves with this message of ‘sufism’ practically in our day-to-day life," he said.
He said the message of ‘sufism’ should be imparted to youths through the course of study as it caused a cohesive bond of love and purity of thoughts.
"I must say that never was a greater need of Sufis' message to be assimilated than now. Pakistan is a land of saints and sufis but it pains us to witness a huge loss of human lives as a result of relentless suicide attacks, terrorism and extremism in our country with little regard for the sufis' message of peace, tolerance and love," he said.
Prof Saeed said Lok Virsa must be appreciated for concerted efforts to promote ‘sufism’ and eliminate religious extremism and fundamentalism for peace. He said Muzakira was a good initiative to encourage youths to share thoughts and ideas to resolve socio-cultural problems besides promoting diversity and bringing people closer.
