PESHAWAR: The hearing on a petition, filed by a girl, reportedly made to walk naked in her village in Dera Ismail Khan, started on Tuesday in the Peshawar High Court (PHC).
In the first hearing, the bench had summoned a report from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa inspector general of police (IGP) and adjourned the hearing till Nov 22. The bench is presided over by PHC Chief Justice YahyaAfridi and consists of Justice Syed Afsar Shah.
During Tuesday's proceedings, the victim's counsel informed the court that Amir Muqam intended to visit the victim and pleaded with the court that the matter should not be turned into political in nature.
While talking to Geo News, ‘In Search of Justice’ Chairperson Salma Malik said the case had been brought to the Peshawar High Court so that it is pursued without pressure from any quarters. ‘In Search of Justice’ is a non-profit organisation that is helping the survivor and her family fight the case against the accused.
The petition has been filed through a senior lawyer, Qazi Muhammad Anwar. Meanwhile, Minister for Human Rights Mumtaz Tarar Tuesday said those involved in the incident of humiliating a teenager in DI Khan would not be spared and given strict punishment as per law. He was responding to calling attention notice regarding cases of human rights abuses, especially against women during the recent weeks in the country.
The minister said that federal government immediately reacted to the incident and a director of the ministry reached the area, lodged the FIR under non-bailable offence and helped the girl record her statement before a magistrate.
He said that the FIR had been registered against nine persons and three accused had also given confessional statements. He said one accused was still at large and efforts were under way to arrest him.
