Dr Ejaz — a pioneer of metallurgy in Pakistan

Prof Dr Ijaz Hussain Khan obtained degree of MSc Pure Chemistry in 1955 from the Institute of Chemistry, Punjab University Lahore securing first position in the university. On the basis of his excellence in Chemistry, he got ‘University Gold Medal’ and ‘Abdul Haq Gold Medal’. He started his career as a lecture in fuel technology at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Punjab University Lahore in 1955.
He also obtained the degree of MSc Chemical Technology in 1958, from Punjab University Lahore. His consistent and devoted service to academics made him an all rounder teacher in Pure and Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology. He was awarded Star Textile Mills Scholarship for higher studies in Metallurgy by the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research in 1963. Khan got PhD degree in Physical Metallurgy from London University and DIC in Physical Metallurgy from Imperial College of Science and Technology (UK) in 1966. He worked for the establishment of an independent degree in Metallurgy and Materials Science at this Institute. He was appointed as Associate Professor in 1968 and professor of Metallurgy and Materials Science in 1975. Khan rendered lifelong services in the development and growth of an institute of immense national importance, establishment of the division of metallurgy and materials science and creation of vitally important linkage between industry and university. He had been nationally and internationally recognised for his professional and technical services. He was elected as a member of PIChE, PIME, IEP (Chemical Section), Society of Corrosion Engineers Pakistan and had made valuable contributions for these professional bodies. He was the Chief Editor, ‘The Pakistan Metallurgist’, editor of ‘The Engineer’, and was presently Chief Editor, ‘PIChE journal’ and honorary editor of the ‘Monthly Engineering Horizons’ Lahore. He authored more than 90 research papers, technical reports and four books. He provided technical assistance to the national industry. Prof Khan made outstanding efforts for sponsored research and developed the concept of Professor as Consultant and Adviser. He made valuable and pioneering contribution in the spread of knowledge through continued educational programmes since 1979 in the field of Corrosion Engineering and Material Engineering.
Currently, he was working as Qarshi Research fellow and a visiting Professor at the Department of Metallurgy & Materials Engineering, CEET, University of the Punjab, Lahore. His lifelong association with the University enabled him to guide and supervise research at both graduate and post graduate levels in Corrosion Science and Engineering.
