Army ready to tackle any threat, aggression: COAS

RAWALPINDI: The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Raheel Sharif, on Tuesday said the armed forces were fully prepared to respond to the entire spectrum of threats.
Addressing a corps commanders conference at the General Headquarters (GHQ) here, Gen Raheel expressed complete satisfaction over the noticeable change in the overall security situation of the country.
Referring to the ongoing peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban, the army chief said it was the only credible way to achieve a lasting peace. He said detractors and spoilers of the talks were against peace and prosperity of Afghanistan and the entire region.
During the meeting, the participants dwelt at length on the internal and external security situation in the country and reviewed the progress of Operation Zarb-e-Azb and the ongoing intelligence based operations in the country.
The forum reviewed the state of readiness and vigil being maintained by the troops along the Line of Control (LoC).Last Monday, the top civil and military leadership discussed the Afghan reconciliation process in the context of the current regional situation.
During the meeting between the army chief General Raheel Sharif and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the overall security situation and the progress of ongoing Operation Zarb-e-Azb was also discussed.
The meeting came days after news of Afghan Taliban chief Mulla Omar’s death and a day after his successor, Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, cast doubts on a fledgling peace process.The second round of face-to-face talks between the Afghan government officials and Taliban representatives, brokered by Pakistan, was postponed following confirmation of Mulla Omar’s death two years ago.
