The Sindh human rights department on Saturday appointed Abdul Sattar Vistro, a noted writer, social activist and resident of Hyderabad, as the focal person on ‘Karo-Kari’ on an honorary basis for the entire province.

Officials said the appointment was made in pursuance of the department’s mandate to promote and protect human rights and monitor violations arising from harmful traditional practices, particularly those related to honour-based violence.

Vistro has rendered commendable services for the cause of human rights, women empowerment and social justice in Sindh. Through his writings, public awareness campaigns and community-level initiatives, he has consistently raised his voice against ‘Karo-Kari’ and other forms of honour-based violence. His longstanding commitment to advocacy and reform has earned him recognition among civil society organisations and human rights defenders across the province.

As the focal person, Vistro will coordinate with local administration, police and civil society organisations regarding cases of Karo-Kari (honour killings) and related human rights violations, collect and report verified data of such cases to the Directorate of Human Rights Sindh, facilitate awareness and advocacy initiatives to curb honour-based violence and submit monthly reports and recommendations to the directorate.

The appointment is purely honorary and carries no financial implications for the Sindh government. It shall remain valid for a period of one year.

The human rights department said it acknowledged Vistro’s continued efforts to safeguard human dignity. It reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating harmful traditional practices through coordinated institutional and community actions.
