Pakistan takes Azerbaijan on board before its engagement with Armenia

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has taken Azerbaijan into confidence before establishing its first ever diplomatic engagement with Azerbaijan archrival Armenia.

Azerbaijan Ambassador Khazar Farhadov told The News here Friday evening in Turkish Victory Day reception that Islamabad and Baku always consult each other in matters of mutual interest.

“We are one nation with two states,” he maintained.

He was asked about Pakistan discussion with Azerbaijan prior to its contacting Armenia, he responded with broad smile and said, “Could you think of it otherwise.”

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar held a telephonic conversation Friday with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan. The DPM/FM welcomed the historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, terming it a positive step for regional stability and prosperity.

The two leaders agreed to consider the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Armenia. They also discussed potential avenues of cooperation, bilaterally and at multilateral fora.
