CHITRAL: Tourism in Chitral has suffered a major setback over the last two years due to the suspension of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights to the area.

The lack of air connectivity has drastically reduced the number of visitors, particularly foreign tourists, many of whom consider road travel unsafe.A foreign tourist, Andrews, told this correspondent that Chitral is an exceptionally beautiful area, home to the unique Kalash community and its rich culture, which is a major attraction for visitors. However, he said the 10-hour-long road journey to reach the valley was not only time-consuming but also physically exhausting.

Domestic tourists share similar concerns. One traveler, Mushfiqur Rahim, said that for families, the long and difficult journey was a major deterrent. “I saw that the airport, offices, and staff are present here, so I don’t understand why the service isn’t operating,” he maintained. When contacted, PIA Sales Manager Ibrahim Khan confirmed that all facilities, including ASF personnel and other necessary staff, were available at Chitral Airport.

The locals and tourism stakeholders have criticised the government for making lofty claims about promoting tourism while failing to take practical measures in destinations like Chitral. They have urged the authorities to operate at least two flights a week to restore the region’s tourism potential.
