Jirga expresses solidarity with family of slain child
ABBOTTABAD: A jirga held at Baragali, organised by the Galiyat Tahafuz Movement, expressed solidarity with the family of 13-year-old Iqra, who was recently raped and murdered in Abbottabad. The jirga also constituted committees to pursue the legal battle.
Hundreds of participants from across Galiyat attended the event, condemning Iqra’s tragic death and discussing ways to provide legal and financial support to her family.Former district nazim Sardar Sher Bahadur presided over the jirga, while Sardar Saleem, Sardar Imtiaz, Col (R) Sardar Shabeer, Sardar Sabir, Sardar Hukamdad, Shakeel, Sardar Fiaz, Maulana Sarfraz Farooqi, Naseer Khan Jadoon, Ishaque Zikraya, and Abdul Rizaque Abbassi spoke on the occasion. Senior journalist Sardar Iftikhar hosted the jirga, which was also attended by several civil society activists, including Naseer Khan Jadoon.
Participants thanked the media for highlighting the issue and demanded justice for the victim’s family.They announced their participation in a protest in Abbottabad today (Friday) to demand justice for Iqra.
They also agreed to explore all legal avenues and vowed to collectively pursue the legal battle.The participants categorically stated that the victim’s poor family would not be left alone and that the entire community would unite to ensure the culprits are punished.
Iqra’s case has sparked widespread outrage and protests in Abbottabad, with civil society members, political leaders, and lawyers demanding strict punishment for the accused, Haris Latif.A committee, headed by MPA Ameena Sardar, has been formed to oversee the case and ensure it reaches its logical conclusion.Police have arrested the accused and obtained a six-day physical remand for interrogation. DNA samples have been sent for forensic analysis.
