Gen Zia’s era most authoritarian: Justice Minallah
SC judge says Bhutto was removed and Supreme Court was also used during General Zia's rule
LAHORE: Supreme Court Justice Athar Minallah has said that General Zia’s was the most authoritarian era in the history of the country.
Addressing a ceremony in Lahore, he said that Bhutto was removed and the Supreme Court was also used during General Zia’s rule. Later, the Supreme Court, after many years, also accepted it.
Justice Athar Minallah said people were subjected to violence in the Lahore Fort for holding a political rally.
General Zia requested the Sri Lankan government that his daughter wanted to have a baby elephant.
He said that this was a request from one government to the government of another country. A 3-year-old baby elephant came to Pakistan from Sri Lanka and was kept in a backyard. “Elephants are also very emotional like human beings and when the baby elephant grew up, they decided to build a zoo in Islamabad and keep it there,” he said.
The Supreme Court judge said that Islamabad High Court had given judgment on enforced disappearances and prisoners’ rights. Similarly, there are many judgments of the Islamabad High Court which protected the fundamental rights.
