WASHINGTON: The US Department of State on Tuesday expressed concerns about the arrests of political leaders in Pakistan.
“We have seen the reports of the arrest of PTI leaders,” the department’s spokesperson Matthew Miller acknowledged during the daily briefing, adding “We are always concerned when we see the arrest of opposition leaders.”
He emphasized that the US supports the peaceful upholding of constitutional and democratic principles including the rule of law, equal justice under the law and respect for human rights like freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly. “We urge these principles to be respected in accordance with Pakistan’s constitution and laws,” he said.
