Shel Silverstein (1930-1999) wove lessons into his poems for children. In his poem, Hug O’ War, he shares the importance of showing kindness to others instead of trying to overpower them.
Hug O’ War
By Shel Silverstein
I will not play at tug o’ war.
I’d rather play at hug o’ war,
Where everyone hugs
Instead of tugs,
Where everyone giggles
And rolls on the rug,
Where everyone kisses,
And everyone grins,
And everyone cuddles,
And everyone wins

Ever cried because it’s a happy occasion?
No, not because the heart is full,
Ever wished for the emptiness to go away?
On the contrary, it decided on a prolonged stay.
Ever looked at laughing faces and felt empty?
Also wanted a laugh like that; loud and high
But the laughter came out as a little lie
That heart whimpered passing by
Sigh... sigh... sigh
I don’t recognize the sound of it anymore
It’s someone else living in here, I’m sure
With a group of people lonely I roam
And my companions watch me lost my way home.

Your fears make you lose or win
Grasp the thing,
Set aims and run for it
You can do what you want,
Behind the scene,
Life is hard!

Burn down darkest thoughts
With flames of positive emotions
And let their ashes evaporate
With winds of hope.

We get involved to be here together
Living our dreams as if it is going to be forever
Who knows? I wish you knew your man, you knew your girl
For having the desire to see their spikes or curls
Falling in love and getting hugs
But, are they from the wrong ones?
I wish we could figure it out
Knowing the names speaking out loud
