Keep the engine running

Motivation is the hype these days; the new talk of the town. Words like hustle, hard work, etc. are the new sensation....

REALITY CHECK

“The thing about reality is that there is no background music.”

Coming across this little but profound sentence spurred a spiral of thoughts, compelling me to contemplate the philosophy by trying to play my humble part in doing it some justice by writing this article. Often we get so immersed in our ideal little worlds of imagination that we make ourselves entirely oblivious of some of the basic realities.

Quite often I see people buying things they like but failing to maintain them. I see people starting off businesses they later abandon. Getting something is easy; once you get it, maintaining it is the hard part. We live in a world where reputation is given more importance than integrity. The true measure of a person’s character is determined by what he chooses to do when there are no hands for applause or fingers to be pointed. What he chooses to do when the music stops. Alone is the place where you should be working the most as that is where the plant of integrity sprouts.

Motivation is the hype these days; the new talk of the town. Words like hustle, hard work, etc. are the new sensation. But merely pumping yourself for five minutes and doing nothing but sitting on the couch for the rest of the day does little to accomplish something. The term self-discipline has lost its value. People fail to realize how heavily contributing the factor of momentum is. It’s true that you need motivation to start but discipline is what keeps the engine running. The thing about winners is that even on their worst days, they’re still the best, giving their all without being shattered by the circumstances, no matter what they might be.

Now, by saying these nice little cocky lines I might make your self-esteem go through the roof by stirring up your work juices for a while, but what happens when you finish reading? What happens when the music stops? When there’s no one watching? That is when everything is decided. It’s you who has to make real changes by taking hard decisions head-on if you seriously want to achieve something.

Young people these days are scared to get out of their comfort zones and explore. They have turned into wasteful attention seekers boasting the number of likes they get on social media; slaves and desperately dependent on recognition, hiding in their safe little cocoons.

David Goggins, an American Navy SEAL, says that succeeding these days is so easy. If you have a little mental toughness, you can surpass majority of the population. Constantly pushing ourselves out of the cocoon is the only viable option for real growth.

I would advise our young people to read a little bit of history and study their roots. We are the descendants of the great people who laid the foundation of science, travelling, inventions and discoveries. The likes of Al-Beruni, Jabir-bin-Hayan and Ibn-e-Batuta, just to name a few. All we can do is spend our humble lives to carry on their legacy. So people, hustle with heart and be loyal to your purpose. Success will definitely follow.
