POETS’ CORNER

Famous elegies

An elegy is a poem that primarily serves the purpose of a lament or a requiem for a recently deceased person.

I hold it true, whate’er befall;

I feel it when I sorrow most;

‘Tis better to have loved and lost

Than never to have loved at all.

- In Memoriaum A.H.H.

by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

With the farming of a verse

Make a vineyard of the curse,

Sing of human unsuccess

In a rapture of distress;

In the deserts of the heart

Let the healing fountain start,

In the prison of his days

Teach the free man how to praise.

- In Memory of W. B. Yeats by W. H. Auden

Wallflower

By Sa’ad Nazeer

Walls came racing toward me

and the sea dashed in between them

as the voice uncanny lazily entered the vacuum,

‘Would you dance with me, mademoiselle?’

I wish you could see

By Anam Afzaal

Light the candle,

In your hand.

Drop by drop, it melts: scorching.

This longing, these tears.

Discredited witnesses.

I’m scattered smoke.

Introduction

By Ayesha Anwer

Swiftly moving

hoping to grasp

this whirlwind of lies

encased in the casket of life

tumbling and turbulent

with varying shades

of diamonds and granites

bedazzled and confusing

is such an introduction.

Tea cups

By Amna Ameer

The brimming,

Cup of tea,

Rises in clouds,

With thoughts,

That surround,

My tongue,

With a taste,

That seems,

Like a familiar,

Caress,

Of infidelity,

I can’t,

Tell what it is,

That drowns,

My heart,

In the memories,

Of sunsets,

Ever experienced,

By a heart,

Once untouched,

And now,

Violated,

By trust,

That hangs,

Like the sun,

On the horizon,

And a half lit moon,

Peering through,

The fog,

That spreads,

Over the sky,

Setting evenings,

Empty cups,

Of an affair,

Now resemble,

Your birthmarks,

You were born into a love,

And now,

You must die,

To forget,

What it was like,

To dissolve,

In the stimulants,

Of hallucinating,

Remembrances,

Casually,

Lost over,

Conversations of self,

Over tea cups,

That are stacked,

In the corner,

Decaying with the thoughts,

That go off haunting,

Another jilted,

Heart.

Unrequited

By Ajiya Zehra

When I see him, I can’t help but smile

If it is but for a moment or a while

I cannot mask the gentle grin

That dons my face when he walks in.

Oh to be in his presence, to have him so near

Makes my heart pound so wildly all surely hear.

And the instant in which our eyes may meet,

That same heart races with an unearthly beat.

His words, his voice, bring such rapture and thrill,

They course through my body and echo there still.

All seems so perfect, all feels so right

When he is the object there in my sight.

And yet, the ecstatic joy and delightful bliss

All in time will be found amiss

For what good is a match once the fire is ignited?

And what use is a love that is unrequited?
