Hi Ed,

Loved the Quiz “Book befuddlement” (February 23). Being a book lover, I enjoyed it very much; would love to see it every week.

Hi Ed

I really enjoy reading your magazine, especially the stories “The girl next door” and “Hackschool Project.” And of course, the “Trust Us” section and the jokes are always amazing.

I have written a story, a really long one that is, and I would be really honoured if you publish it in your magazine in episodes, just like you publish the stories mentioned above. Please tell me about the procedure.

Hey Zunaira, good to know our readers enjoy the episodic series as much as we do. You can email your contributions to us.mag@thenews.com.pk

Make our world a better place!

Hello Editor,

According to World Health Organization, almost 60,000 Pakistanis died in 2015 from the high level of fine particles in the air; it was considered one of the highest death estimates from air pollution.

Air pollution, however, is just one of the ways of causing pollution. We also have to deal with land pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, etc. Everyone has heard these terms, but do we actually know what they mean or how we are contributing to it?

Air pollution refers to the contamination of natural air with pollutants like harmful fumes and chemicals. The increasing number of factories and vehicles are major sources of these harmful gases.

Chemical and bacterial pollutants may further affect the purity of water. Whether it’s industrial waste or untreated domestic sewage or littering, it is dangerous. It reduces the availability of drinkable water, and harms the life - plants and animals - that depends on water for survival.

Our earth is further destroyed directly or indirectly by human activities which abuse its land resources. It can occur when individuals don’t dispose their garbage in the right manner. Or when farmers use chemical fertilizers, herbicides and similar products to “improve” plant life. Or deforestation. Even acid rain is a cause of land pollution.

So let us stop pollution and make our world a better place!

Reflection

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (R.A)

The Prophet (S.A.W) saw some sputum in the direction of the Qibla (on the wall of the mosque) and he disliked that and the sign of disgust was apparent from his face. So he got up and scraped it off with his hand and said, “Whenever anyone of you stands for the prayer, he is speaking in private to his Lord or his Lord is between him and his Qibla. So, none of you should spit in the direction of the Qibla but one can spit to the left or under his foot.” The Prophet then took the corner of his sheet and spat in it and folded it and said, “Or you can do like this.”
