It is developed by id software, the legendary company that made Wolfenstein 3D and the Quake series.
Game developer id Software has been struggling with the new IPs and some believed that they would never return to the videogame industry. Doom 3 was a good game, but not a good Doom game, it could never represent what the series stood for. Doom 2016 is all about demons, and a million ways to kill those demons using big guns and even bigger guns. Of course, the legendary protagonist that is named ‘Doom guy’ returns as well.
First Impressions
Doom 2016 has a very simple, yet striking, main menu. The game then has a very detailed option menu with many options to tweak your graphics and get 60 FPS.
You will be given a pistol in the first five seconds of the game and immediately be put into a fight, no tutorials or anything to help you out! Such a welcome surprise. I haven’t played any game recently which would put you into the action so quickly. About one minute into the game, you get your iconic green coloured armour. After the armour, you get the shotgun. The mess the shotgun makes is just amazing.
It is one of the fastest paced games I have ever played. Players, who have never played the first Doom, will really find the movement speed very strange at first, but will eventually get the hang of it.
Story
The game has a very basic story. However, it is not the main reason why you would play the game. Doom Guy this time is an ancient soldier who was sealed in a tomb and has somehow been revived. Now he has to fight the demons and stop the invasion of hell on Mars.
That is really the entire story. The game has some cutscenes and plenty of radio conversations to help the player, through which objevtives are also given. You will be repeating the same actions a lot in this game, but you won’t get bored since the design is absolutely gorgeous and the environment keeps everthing interesting.
Gameplay
The game has an awesome gunplay. All the guns feel like DOOM guns; They are big, powerful and explosive! Even the basic pistol can shoot off limbs, and it feels great to just run into a bunch of demons and blast them using the Super Shotgun.
Doom 2016 is all about gameplay. The movement speed is absolutely insane! It is fast and you will be moving a lot in this game. Even before release, id software confirmed that this game was by no means a tactical shooter. You will pay with your life if you try to seek cover. The objective of this game is to face the enemies head on. Even for weapon upgrades, you will need to perform certain tasks, which revolve around you killing a bunch of demons in a certain amount of time. There is no doubt that the only real purpose of this game is to give players a playground in which they can kill thousands of demons in a million different ways.
As mentioned before, the guns feel just right! They have a strong amount of kick, and all of the upgrades make sense. For example, you can attach micro missiles to your Heavy Assault Rifle and blow up Hell Knights in a matter of seconds. The Rune challenges allow you to get player upgrades, which make you an even better killing machine.
The monsters are quite gruesome; that is the best description I can give you. They are ugly, hellish. Due to the various experiments that were conducted on them, most of the demons have cybernetics. That makes them even more dangerous and the player must never lose focus around them. The AI of the monsters is great as well, especially on the higher difficulty levels, where a room filled with hundreds of demons feels like a real nightmare.
The only negative side of all this is that the game does seem quite repetitive after a while. Some people might take note of this, while others will enjoy it.
Graphics and performance
This game will bring your PC down to its knees. Luckily, the wide variety of options does let you tweak the graphics to gain a significant number of frames, but the lower quality will be quite noticeable. The game runs fine on consoles, but the best experience is on the PC. On consoles, the game does drop below 60 FPS during high action sequences.
Summary
Doom 2016 is without doubt one of the best FPS games of all time. Not only is it fun to play, it is also a reminder of what twenty-five years of advancement in technology can do. If you don’t believe me, find some of the secret areas present in this game that will allow you to play the classic maps from 1992. You will see the difference. Doom is a game that all gamers should try at least once at full price. There is no doubt that this game will stay on top for a long time. And oh, don’t buy this game for the multi-player, it’s horrible.
