US TALK

From starting as a pizza delivery boy to working in call centres, digital marketing, and sales, aspiring model and actor Muhammad Amaz has demonstrated unwavering persistence throughout his journey.

His dream of becoming an actor was kindled during his teenage years. While his family hoped he would pursue a career in medicine or engineering, Amaz found himself drawn more to computers, cricket, and football. Unable to suppress his true passions any longer, he gathered the courage to leave home at the tender age of 16. He embarked on this adventurous journey on the fourth day of Eid, boarding a packed train to Karachi with only four thousand rupees in hand, and no place to stay or friends to rely on.

For months, he lived on the streets, using petrol pumps and chai stalls as makeshift homes. A few coordinators seeking extras gave him daily wage opportunities until a turning point in his career arrived during the filming of Khel Khel Mein, featuring superstar Sajal Aly and Bilal Abbas. Sajal recognized his potential and urged the production team to offer him better opportunities This ultimately led to numerous shoots for brands such as Republic, Engine, Servis, Bata, and others. During this time, Amaz had no stable place to prepare for shoots, often getting ready in mosques or public areas.

His journey is a powerful testament to the idea that with passion, determination, and resilience, dreams can indeed become a reality. Last year in December at the Bridal Couture Week 2024 in Lahore, Amaz garnered huge accolades for his brilliant work and amazing ramp walk.

Us: What do you chase: fame, money, or success?

Muhammad Amaz: There’s nothing like the sweet taste of success that comes from doing work I love. And once you get it, fame and money will naturally follow – like moths to a flame!

Us: What hurdles did you face when you first jumped into the industry?

MA: When I first stepped into this bustling world, it felt like hunting for a needle in a haystack. When I was living on the streets of Karachi, I met a talent coordinator who lined up my portfolio with a photographer but when he demanded forty thousand rupees, I had to step back. However, later I got the chance to work as an “extra artist”, marking the beginning of my struggle in the industry.

Us: How did the big break come your way?

MA: In 2023, ace photographer Khawar Riaz reached out to me. He took only three pictures, yet those images went viral. This sudden exposure opened the floodgates for numerous shoots and commercial opportunities with notable brands like Jazz, Zong, and Dettol. So I eventually shifted to Lahore and worked with Deepak and Fahad, Zellbury, Outfitters, LAMA, etcetera. I also became the face of Structure Gym and made it to the London Fashion Week website followed by a stream of TVCs.

Us: Do you think only good looks and connections sell here?

MA: You bet! While talent can keep you afloat, you’ll need that network support to snag that golden opportunity. It’s not just about what you know, but who you know!

Us: With all the work coming your way, how do you manage to look versatile?

MA: To keep myself fresh, I make it a point to stay on top of my game. I whip up a healthy diet, hit the gym regularly, and indulge in skincare like it’s my secret weapon. And let’s not forget swimming and enjoying life – after all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!

Us: What limitations do you follow and what work ethics do you observe?

MA: I’m all in as long as the brand has a solid reputation and the production team is top-notch. It’s about strutting my stuff confidently while still keeping my standards high! To keep myself out of the gossip loop, I don’t overstay after my work is done. By maintaining my boundaries, I ensure I’m not just another fish caught in the net.

Us: How are you prepping to be the next fashion industry sensation?

MA: I’m on a continuous journey of evolution – learning the ropes, staying updated with trends, and always preparing myself for the next big break. You’ve got to keep your ear to the ground and your eyes on the prize!

Us: As an actor, which characters inspire you?

MA: I’m drawn to complex characters with a psychotic edge, like the dark and toxic roles Shah Rukh Khan has played in films like Darr. There's something fascinating about the depth and intensity of such characters.

Us: What role has social media played in your journey?

MA: Social media has been a game changer for me! It serves as my online portfolio, allowing media houses and brands to discover me with just a click. The process is swift and straightforward, making it easy for opportunities to come knocking at my door!

Us: How do you handle self-doubt?

MA: Sure I deal with insecurity from time to time, but I refuse to let it hold me back. I’ve learned that self-doubt is just part of the game – it’s how I respond that really counts.
