DID YOU KNOW?

Australia is wider than the Moon

Reflection

The equatorial diameter of Earth’s moon is 3,476 kilometres. The width of Australia – the distance across the country, east to west – is about 4,000 kilometres. That means Australia is more than 500 kilometres wider than the Moon!

The island ranks as the sixth largest country in the world, after Russia, Canada, China, the United States, and Brazil, but with a population of only 26.5 million, the region is home to just 0.33 percent of the total world population and is 55th on the global list of countries (and dependencies) by population.

And while the land of Oz might indeed be wider than Earth’s lone satellite, its total land area is significantly less than that of the Moon. Australia – a flat surface on a bigger sphere – has a total land area of 7.69 million square kilometres, while the surface area of the moon – a sphere – is 37.94 million square kilometres.
