Several members of the creative community have recently signed an open letter for the sake of planet earth, and addressed the leadership of the upcoming Paris Climate Conference. The petition is organized by Julie’s Bicycle, a not-for-profit organization aimed at environmental sustainability and contains endorsement from industry giants like Robert Plant, Bjork and Thom Yorke.
The open letter states: “We are deeply concerned that our global economic and industrial systems are accelerating rates of extinction, desertification and soil depletion, degrading ecosystems, acidifying and littering our rivers and oceans, and resulting in a relentless rise in greenhouse gas emissions driving irreversible climate change. In short, we are overwhelming the planet’s life support systems. The outcomes of COP21 and the political decisions taken over the next months will determine many of the long-term conditions that will affect us today and for many generations to come.”
Others who have signed the open letter include Philip Selway of Radiohead, David Bowie, Robert Plant, Anastacia, Margaret Atwood (writer), Bjork, Coldplay, Sting, Lily Cole (model), Dido, Colin Firth (actor), My Morning Jacket, Leona Lewis, Thandie Newton (actor) and Yoko Ono among others.
The Paris Climate Conference begins today (November 30) and will run through till December 11. Meanwhile several artists will also participate in the concert, Pathway to Paris that aims to create awareness about environment and the urgency for climate “action”. The show will feature, among others, Thom Yorke from Radiohead who confirmed his appearance on Twitter and said, “Will be in Paris as planned on 4th & 5th December to put pressure on our glorious leaders at #COP21 -now or never!”
