Lahore-based performing arts group, Ajoka Theatre is all geared up for its new play, called Saira Aur Maira, which will pay a tribute to the late human rights activist Asma Jahangir.

Written and directed by Shahid Mehmood Nadeem, Saira aur Maira will highlight some of Asma Jahangir’s most historic cases along with showcasing her struggle as a human rights lawyer, for which she received criticism and appreciation at the same time. In fact, she was one of the first women to speak up against honour killings in Pakistan.

“Saira aur Maira is a tribute to the iconic human rights campaigner Asma Jahangir and the play has been specially written by Shahid Nadeem for the Asma Jahangir Conference 2019,” read the post on Ajoka Theatre’s official Facebook handle.

“Asma was soul-mate of Ajoka’s founder Madeeha Gauhar and a source of inspiration for Ajoka. Saira aur Maira is also a celebration of courage and conviction of the women fighting against unjust patriarchal system, supported by civil society and ultimately, the system. The story unfolds in a dramatic way and is supported by heart-warming music and spectacular choreography.”

According to Nadeem, Jahangir was one of a kind and always made sure to raise her voice against the oppressive segments in society and that this theatrical production will have a strong social and emotional impact on audiences.

The play is slated to premiere on October 19 at Alhamra Hall 2, The Mall, Lahore.
