Emmy Awards 2018: Game of Thrones, Netflix land most nominations

Sandra Oh makes Emmy history with her nomination for Killing Eve, plus other snubs and surprises.

The nominations for Emmy Awards 2018 is a mostly predictable affair. And while they got some things right, a lot has been left out.

Our story begins with Sandra Oh, nominated in the category of Best Actress in a Drama Series for her impeccable performance in Killing Eve. She has made Emmy history as the first woman of Asian descent to get a nod for lead actress in a drama serial.

Sadly, Killing Eve did not make a cut for Best Drama nomination neither did Oh’s co-star Jodie Comer.

The lack of nomination for Game of Thrones last year made room for The Handmaid’s Tale to win best drama. But now that fan-favourite series is back with 22 nominations, will other nominees like The Handmaid’s Tale, The Americans or any of the others really win? Nope.

For the first time in eighteen years, HBO is not leading the list with most nominations. That honour has now gone to Netflix as the streaming site has landed a total of 112 nods to HBO’s 108 nods. How times change.

Ryan Murphy’s Assassination of Gianni Versace managed to land multiple nominations including one for Ricky Martin and another for Penelope Cruz even though both were wasted on the series which belonged to one man: Darren Criss, who is fortunately nominated.

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is back with a nomination for his performance in Patrick Melrose so it’s really between him and Criss. The Emmy nominations were announced by The Handmaid’s Tale’s Samira Wiley and New Amsterdam’s Ryan Eggold while the main ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 17.
