According to sources, the actor had been suffering from kidney problems for several years. Kapoor appeared in more than 150 films and his famous dialogue ‘Mere Pass Maa Hai’ from Dewaar remains timeless.
As the news of his demise spread across the interwebs and beyond, many celebrities from India and Pakistan took to social media to express their grief and pay tribute to the celebrated actor, filmmaker and humanitarian. One case in point is Amitabh Bachchan, who shared the screen with Kapoor in several memorable films including Shaan, Silsila, Kabhie Kabhie, Namak Halal and penned an emotional note upon hearing the news. He wrote, “He fondly addressed me as ‘babbua’ and with him have gone many incredible unread chapters of his and my life.”
Aamir Khan, taking to social media, shared, “It is a sad day for us all. He was not only a great star and a passionate filmmaker, but also a wonderful human being. His work has always given Indian audience great joy ... His contribution to the Indian theatre was huge.”
Bollywood’s current crossover star, Priyanka Chopra also wrote about Kapoor’s demise on Twitter and noted, “An end of an era. RIP #ShashiKapoor ji... A talent, the world had the pleasure of witnessing; a humanitarian I had the pleasure of meeting; a charmer the world will always remember. Condolences to the family and fans.”
The outpouring of grief is not restricted to Bollywood stars though. Right here at home, many stars (like their Indian counterparts) have taken to social media to mourn the loss of this legendary actor.
Salman Ahmed, who met Shashi Kapoor on the sets of movie Jinnah wrote: “A very kind man & a great actor, I met #ShashiKapoor in Karachi on the set of the film #Jinnah. He always believed in peace & harmony among neighbours. Free at last. (RIP)”
Ali Zafar, reflecting on the death of the 1970s superstar, noted, “RIP #ShashiKapoor sir. Your infectious smile, charm and iconic renditions will always remain.”
