Ben Affleck-starrer Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice certainly raked in the money but in terms of critical appeal, the film remains one of the worst superhero films to have emerged in recent years.
The criticism has been so strong that stories about Affleck being replaced began surfacing. He was also the target of memes that went viral across the interwebs.
Though Affleck will continue to essay Batman, he has finally opened up about the criticism with which the film was greeted.
Speaking to movie magazine Empire, in a recent interview, Affleck noted, “I can understand people saying (Batman V Superman) was too dark, or this was outside the tone of what I’m used to seeing with a Batman story, and I think that’s a fair criticism.”
Directed by Zack Synder, the film was supposed to be the curtain raiser for the upcoming multiple superhero vehicle, Justice League but given the response its trailer has received, DC is rightfully worried.
Affleck went on to state that director Snyder “wanted to make a movie that was more fun, that was a little bit light, that wasn’t so encumbered with heavy melodrama.”
Of course, a lot has changed since then. While DC’s Wonder Woman did well, both critically and commercially, the Zack Snyder-directed Justice League is being re-shot partially by Joss Whedon for fear that the film is too dark as is and won’t come close to the box office figures that rival studio, Marvel collected with its multiple superhero vehicle, Avengers.
Whether Whedon can insert wit into the film remains to be seen but if anyone can do it, it’s him.
