Though 2017 has turned out to be a somewhat disappointing year for local cinema so far, with most of the films failing at the box office, there is still some hope in the shape of films that are expected to release in the coming months. The second half of the year will see the release of Pakistan’s first ever superhero film Project Ghazi, followed by Na Maloom Afraad 2, Punjab Nahi Jaungi and Chupan Chupai on Eid-ul-Azha while Cake, Rangreza and Rehbra are also expected to release later in the year. Considering the trailers of some of these films that are out, these projects belong to multiple genres and are likely to add diversity and freshness to Pakistan’s film industry.

The most recent addition to the list of trailers is that of Nadeem Baig’s romantic drama Punjab Nahi Jaungi which comes out on Eid ul Azha. Starring Dillagi duo Humayun Saeed and Mehwish Hayat alongside Urwa Hocane, Ahmed Ali Butt and Azfar Rehman, the trailer – revealed amidst much fanfare yesterday - packs quite a punch. Despite an apparently clichéd and highly predictable storyline, the film stands out due to its star power, performances, sets and the way it has been shot. The filmy feel that is usually missing in local films is quite strong and hopes are high.

The trailer features Saeed as a Punjabi feudal, who falls in love with a girl in Karachi, essayed by Mehwish Hayat while another girl (Urwa Hocane) is waiting for him back home. Bold, independent and strong, Hayat is committed to another guy, played by Azfar Rehman and Saeed learns that it won’t be easy to win her over. Though she too falls in love with Saeed, she is not willing to go to Punjab (hence, the title of the film) where Saeed’s family lives and this is the major conflict in the film.

Hayat’s character in Punjab Nahi Jaungi reminds us of Anmol in Dillagi in which she essayed the role of an outspoken girl who never shied away from speaking her mind and was headstrong as well as opinionated and fearless. And this is what we like about her in PNJ too. Urwa Hocane, on the other hand, looks pretty but doesn’t make much of an impression in the trailer; her dance moves are awkward.

The trailer has garnered mostly positive reviews from viewers and critics and a lot of people feel that it is going to be a huge success at the box office. We hope the film turns out to be as good as the trailer and adds some value to the list of films being released in Pakistan this year.
