Upcoming Bollywood courtroom-thriller, Pink, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Tapsee Pannu, has a strong Pakistani connection. The film’s central plot echoes the state of women on this side of the border too – in how women face the brunt of a judgmental, discriminatory and misogynistic society on either sides - while the soundtrack has several elements that give it a Pakistani connection.
Among them is the presence of two Pakistani female vocalists on its track list, namely Faiza Mujahid and Qurat-ul-ain Balouch. What’s most noticeable is that each one of them is carrying the songs on their shoulders.
While Mujahid’s is an energy-fuelled anthem for the modern-day woman, QB’s is sad but soul-stirring. We’ve seen QB sing similar songs before with her deep, piercing voice and nail them on the head and that’s exactly why ‘Kaari Kaari’ succeeds. A song that hinges on a cry for liberation, one that is about the search for hope, ‘Kaari Kaari’ was meant for QB’s vocal abilities and vice versa.
Penned by Tanveer Ghazi and composed by Shantanu Moitra, the song is a perfect melody to the darkness that the film beholds. Yes, it’s another sad song that works in the film’s favour given listeners’ love affair with melancholic melodies but it has a more relatable meaning attached to it in this day and age.
The film’s trailer has peaked our curiosity and upon release, will hopefully initiate a dialogue about the times we live in. It’s scheduled to hit theatres on September 16, which also happens to be International Women’s Day, so watch out for it.
