What is 8chan that Aussie terrorist used before Christchurch shooting ?
8chan was used by Brenton Tarrant to announce his plan
Christchurch shooter who killed over 49 Muslims on Friday announced the impending attack on 8chan, a message board that is delisted from Google's search results for violation of terms of use.
Dubbed as the Internet's darkest corners, Brenton Tarrant used it to inform the users about his intentions before live streaming his rampage on the Facebook.
According to report, an anonymous user said on the message board "Well lads, it’s time to stop shitposting and time to make a real life effort post … by the time you read this I should be going live,”.
Based on intricate and anonymous comment threads, 8chan was founded by Fredrick Brennan, a user of similar site 4chan, in 2013.
It is now owned by American Jim Watkins based in Philippines.
4chan and 8chan allow people to post hate speech which Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms don't.
It was founded after #GamerGate which saw internet forums being used to dox and harass female video game enthusiasts who were pushing back against sexism in their industry, according to National Post.
Following the attack in New Zealand, Washington Post’s Drew Harwell remarked on Twitter: “The New Zealand massacre was livestreamed on Facebook, announced on 8chan, reposted on YouTube, commentated about on Reddit, and mirrored around the world before the tech companies could even react.”
