Sultans defeat Zalmi, continue to dominate points table

Multan Sultans defeated Peshawar Zalmi by 19 runs in the third edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) here at the Dubai International Cricket stadium on Tuesday night.

DUBAI: Multan Sultans defeated Peshawar Zalmi by 19 runs in the sixteenth match of Pakistan Super League's (PSL)  third edition  here at the Dubai International Cricket stadium on Tuesday night.

Having been sent into bat by Peshawar, the Sultans batsmen dominated the scene right from the beginning as they plundered 183 for three against Zalmi, which is the highest total in PSL-3 so far.  While Tanvir and Masood significantly contributed in the second victory of the table-toppers  over defending champions Peshawar in the same tournament.

In chase of a huge total, Peshawar batted well as Hafeez played a captain inning, smashing 56, but  other batsmen could not maintain  the  strike rate and the team  ultimately fell short by 19 runs to 164 for 8.

The previous highest was also made by the Sultans – 179-5 against Lahore Qalandars on February 23 at the same venue.

The man of the match Sohaib Maqsood hammered an unbeaten 85 from just 42 balls with seven sixes and four boundaries. While Sohail Tanvir bagged three crucial wickets.

This was also a record individual score by a batsman in PSL-3. The previous highest was scored by two batsmen – 71 not out by DR Smith (Peshawar Zalmi) against Karachi Kings at Dubai on Feb 25, and 71 by Luke Ronchi (Islamabad United) against Karachi Kings at Shrjah on March 4.

Ahmed Shahzad and Kumar Sangakkara provided a sound start of 51 and then Shehzad along with Sohaib added 56 for the second wicket. Shehzad made 37 and Sangakkara scored 28.

Later captain Shoaib Malik got out for 13 while Kieron Pollard remained not out on 16, hitting two sixes in his eight-ball short innings.

Peshawar made three changes in their team – Andre Fletcher, Riki Wessels and Hammad Azam have replaced Tamim Iqbal, Sabbir Rehman and Khalid Usman. Tamim and Sabbir have gone back to their country Bangladesh for playing the tri-series while Khalid is unfit.

Multan, on the other hand, remained unchanged.
