BEIJING: China has unveiled its plans for the world’s first pollution-eating ‘Forest City’ --Liuzhou Forest City --in Hebei province to combat the menace of pollution.

The Liuzhou Forest City will be China’s first forest city. It is designed by Milan-based Italian firm Stefano Boeri Architetti to help the country tackle its air pollution problem.

The construction is set to begin in 2020.

The 342-acre, self-contained neighborhood will comprise more than 70 buildings -- including homes, hospitals, hotels, schools and offices -- all of which will be covered with 40,000 trees and almost a million plants.

Eventually, up to 30,000 people could call the Forest City home.

The plants will produce around 900 tons of oxygen and absorb almost 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide and 57 tons of pollutants per year.

The city will rely on geothermal energy and solar panels for electricity.

The Chinese forest city comes on the heels of Vertical Forest in Milan, Italy, where two residential towers host 900 trees and more than 20,000 plants.

The firm principal told CNN from Milan, this was their first experiment of the urban environment that's really trying to find a balance with nature.
