Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt receives extortion calls, death threats

MUMBAI: Bollywood director and producer Mahesh Bhatt filed an FIR in Juhu police station of Mumbai after receiving extortion calls and death threats from an unidentified person.

According to Indian media, Mahesh Bhatt received a threat call on February 26. A series of text messages and WhatsApp messages followed the call by a person claiming to be a gang leader. The extortionist threatened that if Bhatt failed to pay up, he would kill his daughter Alia Bhatt and wife Soni Razdan.

"A bolt from the blue in the form of an extortion call & threat to my family was nipped in the bud by the MH & UP police in tandem. Gratitude! All of us is better than one of us!!" Bhatt tweeted on Thursday.

The caller, Sandeep Sahu, who has been detained by Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force from Lucknow, was demanding a sum of for Rs 50 lakhs.

Fearing for the safety of his family, Mahesh Bhatt filed a case on Wednesday under section 387 (causing a person to fear death or grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion).
