‘Peaky Blinders’ gets exciting update as Cillian Murphy takes on producer role

The Cillian Murphy-led masterpiece, Peaky Blinders, has grown from being a BBC series to a worldwide phenomenon on Neflix.

It has a total of six seasons, several television awards and, in 2025, the premiere of a full-length film, namely, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.

The latter dominated Netflix streaming after earning a Certified Fresh rating of 90 percent from critics and fans alike on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, Netflix has green-lighted a Peaky Blinders sequel series, and the even better news is what the show's screenwriter and director, Steven Knight, just delivered.

As the cast continues to grieve the loss of Sam Neill, they hope to honor him with more classic storytelling from a series he contributed in a major way to.

Knight, speaking on the Zoe Ball in the Afternoon podcast, says the hay is officially in the barn with Peaky's script, having already been notified that Netflix has preordered Season 2.

"Peaky [Blinders]: The New Generation, I guess you can call it, is already in the can," he said. "It is so good. I mean, I would say that, wouldn't I? But it is really, really good."

It's been 13 years since the original Peaky Blinders made its premiere on BBC Two, and Knight still has trouble processing exactly how meaningful the franchise has become to its audience,

"When [Peaky Blinders] was first a BBC Two drama and people would go, '1920s Birmingham, with Birmingham accents and gangsters?' said Knight.

"Cillian [Murphy] was saying that he and Benjamin [Zephaniah] were shooting the first two or three days, and they got together and said, 'What do you think? Is this gonna work?' And they were like, 'Nah, I don't think so,’” Knight recalled.

"But then, it just went bonkers. I really realized something was happening when Snoop Dogg's agent was in touch, and said [Snoop] wants to meet you. We spent three hours in a hotel room talking about how Peaky reminded him of how he got involved in gang culture. And I just thought, 'This is madness,'" Steven Knight recalled of how the Cillian Murphy starrer, Peaky Blinders, became a global success.
