Trump welcomes Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan’s new defence pact, calling it an ‘important step’
Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement last week, formalising their long-standing security ties
US President Donald Trump has praised a new mutual defence pact signed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan, calling the agreement an “important first step”.
The three US allies signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement last week, formalising their long-standing security ties through a NATO-style collective defence arrangement.
Under the agreement, an attack against any of the three countries “shall be regarded as attack on them all.”
“Very happy to see that Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have recently, and finally, signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday.
“It shows how the Middle East is coming together, and how Countries will finally be able to defend themselves in a more meaningful way.”
The agreement was signed in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, as the kingdom faces security threats on multiple fronts.
The pact represents a significant expansion of defence cooperation between the three countries, which have maintained close military and security relationships for years.
Trump's endorsement comes as Washington's regional allies seek to strengthen their own security arrangements amid heightened tensions across the Middle East.
The agreement establishes a collective defence principle similar to NATO's, under which an attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all three.
