What to expect from Trump’s primetime election security speech ahead of the midterms
‘As usual, anonymous sources are speculating about what President Trump will say during his speech in evening today, said White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt
US President Donald Trump is all set to deliver a prime-time speech on Thursday focused on election security, sparking renewed focus on his persistent allegations regarding election administration as Republicans navigate a grueling midterm election in November.
All eyes are on the White House to see whether the president's remarks would include revelations about compromise of classified data related to China’s intention to intervene in the 2020 US election.
Trump has spent years casting doubts on electoral outcomes with spurious statements that his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden was rigged. Subsequently, he has also advanced false claims including that mail-in balloting is plagued by corruption, voting machines are vulnerable and non-citizen voting is widespread.
According to sources, a White House task force led by conservative journalist John Solomon recently requested r documents from the intelligence community and has spent the past weeks evaluating their value ahead of Trump’s speech.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said: “As usual, anonymous sources are speculating about what President Trump will say during his speech on Thursday evening.”
Trump has pursued the consolidation of federal power over the administration of elections which legally resides with state governments- since returning to office in January 2025. Republican leaders have urged Trump to focus on key issues that matter most to Americans including high living costs.
Republicans are navigating political headwinds
Republicans are steering through political headwinds as the midterm election approaches, with Trump’s approval rating severely battered by the Iran war and high energy prices.
They face an uphill struggle to win a Senate majority with significant races unfolding in Republican-inclined states. Currently it is not clear whether television networks will give the White House airtime for Trump’s speech.
Additionally, some Democrats including US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez encouraged networks not to do so, adding that Trump is likely to reiterate falsehoods about elections.
