Musk claims Neuralink could give humans superhuman abilities
Neuralink was founded in 2016 and specialises in designing brain-computer interfaces to be implanted into patients with neurological impairment
Elon Musk has ignited fresh debate around his brain-computer interface company Neuralink after reportedly claiming the technology could one day give humans what he described as "superhuman cybernetic abilities".
The remarks, which circulated widely on social media, included claims that Neuralink could restore speech to non-verbal patients, return sight to those who have lost their eyes or optic nerves, and enable paralysed individuals to walk again.
The exact quote attributed to Musk regarding the comparison of the technology with "Christ's miracles" went viral online but has not been verified by any public statement or press conference up until now.
Neuralink was founded in 2016 and specialises in designing brain-computer interfaces to be implanted into patients with neurological and physical impairments.
Moreover, the company has undertaken human trials, showing that implanted equipment enables patients suffering from paralysis to control digital interfaces via neural impulses alone. It is an achievement, which is worth mentioning; however, it has been recognised with some level of reservation by scientists.
At this stage, the company's further claims on fully restoring sight for the congenitally blind people and helping paralysed patients to move are still undergoing the experimental testing phase and have not been confirmed or verified independently yet.
There are different opinions concerning the cited statements. While some users point out the possible medical benefits of this brain-computer interface innovation, especially when applied to patients who suffer from such diseases as ALS, locked-in syndrome, and serious spinal injuries, others ask whether brain implants may be utilised for something else in the future because science is just another tool in addition to other beliefs.
One of the most popular comments called Musk "the person who seeks control and domination over humanity".
