Did Jelly Roll plan his divorce timing?
Jelly Roll and Bunnie Xo's divorce could take an unexpected turn
Jelly Roll's divorce filing may offer clues about how his split from Bunnie Xo could unfold.
According to Tennessee family law attorney Holly Davis, who does not represent either party, filing appears to be "very neutral and agreement-oriented" rather than the start of contentious legal battle.
The Country singer, who real name is Jason DeFord, filed for divorce from Bunnie, real name Alisa DeFord, on May 18 after nearly 10 years of their marriage.
Holly told People Magazine, "As I read the filing, first of all, I think it's a very neutral and agreement-oriented filing. It doesn't look like a contested divorce filing."
Notably, Holly shared the detail in the documents is the reference to marital property that still needs to be divided.
While she noted there is no way to know whether the couple signed a prenuptial agreement, the language used in the filing could suggest either that no prenup exists or that certain assets fall outside its terms.
"Because the filing referenced the fact that they do have property to divide up, I get the sense they might not have a prenup, or if they do, there are certain assets that fall outside the prenup," she said.
Adding, "I would bet they might not, and if they do, it doesn't cover everything."
The attorney also pointed to wording indicating that Jelly Roll expects both parties to reach a Marital Dissolution Agreement, which would settle issues related to assets and debts outside of court.
She said, "Tennessee has a non-formulaic approach to whether or not the court awards spousal support or alimony depending on how long a marriage lasts."
"There's no real rule that says that if Jelly Roll files before the 10-year mark, his wife won't get anything," Holly added.
However, Holly Davis noted that it is possible the timing was intentional. "Once a marriage lasts 10 years or longer, a court can consider that length of marriage when awarding any money to the wife as part of the divorce."
"It looks very agreement-oriented to me. The fact that this got filed in May and we're now in June suggests they're probably mediating this right now," the attorney told the outlet.
