Ukraine takes major step towards joining European Union, along with Moldova
Ukraine and Moldova became EU candidate countries in 2022 shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine
Ukraine and Moldova formally began the first phase of European Union membership negotiations on Monday, marking a major step in their long-running bids to join the bloc.
Senior EU officials and ministers from both countries met in Luxembourg to launch the talks, which focus on rule of law, democracy and governance reforms.
Ukraine and Moldova became EU candidate countries in 2022 shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. However, substantive negotiations were delayed after opposition from Hungary’s former government.
Last week, EU member states unanimously agreed to open the first negotiation cluster after Hungary’s new government lifted its objections.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa praised both countries in a joint statement, saying they admired “the determination, courage and hard work shown by both countries in advancing reforms, even in the face of immense challenges”.
“Enlargement is a strategic choice,” they added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the move, saying: “Ukraine is doing what is necessary, and it is important that the EU is also keeping its word. The opening of the first cluster is significant political and moral support for our state and our people.”
Despite progress, EU officials say Ukraine still has major reforms to complete, including strengthening anti-corruption institutions and judicial independence, before full membership negotiations can advance further.
