Steven Spielberg reveals wife's one request that changed his career path
The filmmaker opened up about family sacrifice behind Hollywood success
Steven Spielberg, known as one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema, revealed his wife Kate Capshaw's role before he became the highest-grossing director of all time.
The Jurassic Park director made a recent appearance on IMO and explained to Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson how difficult it can be to balance filmmaking with being present at home.
Spielberg, whose net worth is almost 7 billion dollars as per Forbes, said, "One of the biggest challenges is just running out of excuses why I can't get home for dinner. Because it's my loss. It's their loss, but it's also my loss."
The EGOT-awards winner admitted his wife Capshaw strongly influenced how he made major career decisions, especially when he launched DreamWorks with David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg.
But he only agreed to work with the franchise if he would be allowed to live a normal family life.
Spielberg recalled, "When we formed DreamWorks, Kate said, the only way I'm really going to say this is OK with me is if you get home every night by 6 — 5:45 is better — and have dinner with the family."
"Don't go to work at 6 or 7. Unless you're shooting, you can get up at 5:30, which we usually do. When you're not, when you're running a studio, you've got to have a 9-to-5 job."
He added, "It's going to be a real time drain for me, and I need to be with my family."
The filmmaker shared that his family-first approach has shaped other career choices too, including turning down big projects like Harry Potter in the past.
It is pertinent to mention that Spielberg tied the knot with actress Kate Capshaw in 1991, and together they have raised a large blended family of seven children.
