'Your LinkedIn is trash': Here's what board recruiters see
LinkedIn Career Expert Catherine Fisher puts it plainly: think of your profile as your digital first impression
"Your LinkedIn is trash." Spencer Stuart Executive Search Advisor Latoya Antonio didn't soften theis phrase. She was addressing a room full of senior leaders at the ExcelerateHer Women's Leadership Summit, people with decades of experience, C-suite titles, and board ambitions, and her point was that their digital presence wasn't matching their real-world authority.
For many in that room, the profile they'd neglected for years was the first thing a board recruiter was going to see.
Executive search at the board level has shifted. Firms like Spencer Stuart and Korn Ferry increasingly use LinkedIn as a first-pass filter before any direct outreach.
The executive demonstrates their strategic thinking through their professional profile, which contains only basic CV information and their work history. Antonio's bluntness at the summit was a direct response to how common that gap is, even among high-achieving leaders.
LinkedIn Career Expert Catherine Fisher puts it plainly: think of your profile as your digital first impression. The problem is that most executives treat it as a last impression something to update after they've already moved on.
Three changes LinkedIn users should follow
Fisher considers the profile photo to be the most undervalued quick win. Professionals with a profile photo receive up to twice as many profile views as those without one. The user can achieve professional results by using any clear headshot which shows their face against a plain background. The bar is recognition, not glamour.
Recruiters scan for specific achievements, not job descriptions. Fisher recommends using the Featured section as a portfolio which contains presentations and articles and board papers to showcase your governance-role capabilities.
The smallest investment in verification brings the most obvious financial benefits. LinkedIn data shows verified members receive a 60% boost in profile views.
