Janet Jackson real reason behind absence from ‘Michael’ biopic revealed
Janet Jackson’s absence from Michael Jackson’s biopic, ‘Michael’ was questioned
Janet Jackson is said to have declined to appear in the new biopic Michael about her late brother.
Janet’s sister, fellow singer LaToya Jackson made the claim while speaking at the premiere of the Antoine Fuqua-directed film Michael, which revolves around the life of Michael Jackson.
LaToya told Variety about her 59-year-old sibling, “I wish everybody was in the movie. (Janet) was asked and she kindly declined so you have to respect her wishes.”
Michael features Jaafar Jackson as the titular character, with Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Nia Long playing Katherine Jackson.
Jessica Sula plays LaToya, while Juliano Valdi portrays a younger version of Michael.
The project, set for release in cinemas on April 24, has been developed with the involvement of Michael’s estate, including executive producer Prince Jackson, though his siblings Bigi Jackson and Paris Jackson are not involved.
Its director Antoine Fuqua addressed the approach taken in making the film, insisting that family’s opinion was prime, he said, “You’re telling somebody’s life – you want to make sure that they’re happy.”
But Paris Jackson has publicly criticised the film in a video shared on social media.
She said, “The film panders to a very specific section of my dad’s fandom that still lives in the fantasy. And they’re going to be happy with it.”
Antoine also spoke about Janet’s absence, stating: “I have so much respect and love for Janet, but you know it’s OK. She’s supportive of Jaafar and that’s what matters.”
LaToya also praised Jaafar’s performance in the film, saying, “Oh my gosh, I have to tell you that Jaafar was absolutely fabulous. I’m sure you’ve seen the movie and you know how wonderful he is, how we all forget and think that we’re watching Mike. It’s like, ‘Oh, I forgot this is Jaafar.’”
