The British media regulator, Ofcom confirmed that its formal investigation into X will continue. The probe centres on sexually intimate deepfakes generated by the Grok AI chatbot.

Although Ofcom welcomed X’s recent policy changes, it maintains that the investigation is necessary to ensure the company fully complies with the UK law.

According to Reuters, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI said on Wednesday that it had imposed new restrictions on all Grok users, specifically limiting image editing in response to concerns raised by global regulators.

Ofcom said in a statement, “This is a welcome development as our formal investigation remains ongoing. We are working round the clock to progress this and get answers into what went wrong and what’s being done to fix it.”

Moreover, Ofcom, the technology watchdog this week issued warnings that it could launch an investigation into X over the images and said it had made “urgent contact” with the social media site. Musk said this week: “Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content.”

Nonetheless, if X fails to prevent another surge of harmful AI content within the month, legal experts warn that Ofcom may make its first ever application to the High Court to restrict the platform’s access in the UK.
